I don't know about dastardly, but there are a lot of schemes I could pull off with that much fire-power. You'd all have made lovely super-human shields, at the very least. And it would have been quite good for my reputation to be seen with the Young Avengers in public.

Couldn't have that, now could we? Wouldn't want to ruin your bad reputation.

Normally, it's my job to take the conversation on a snipe hunt.

Is it so hard to believe that I thought it was for the best I went away?

Is it so hard to believe you didn't have to? You don't have to be a bad guy, chico. Yeah, I get it, you're the legacy of this big, bad evil, blah blah blah. You can do good, too, you know.

I can, yes, but... not in the way you can. I can't stop being Loki, and I can't make myself a hero in the way you have.

[A sigh.] I don't know why I even bother. You want to be the bad guy, you want to walk that road, fine. Go ahead. See if I care.

No, I want to be the good guy. I just don't want to do it in a group that I could, one day, destroy, entirely on a whim or even without intent. And if I'd have said goodbye, you'd have managed to stop me from leaving.

Right, because you care so much about us.

I'm fine with you going solo, chico, but there are better ways you could have done it.

[He sighs again, because seriously, he's not good at admitting this sort of thing.]

If I really felt nothing for any of you, I'd not be having this particular phone call.

Oh, potentially there were many ways I could have left, but it was the only way I could think of that would be a clean break and not just a partial fracture.

[She doesn't comment on the "clean break" line. God knows she's guilty enough of that herself.]

It was. Hit the call button entirely by mistake.

[There's a long, maybe awkward silence that follows. By all logic, one of them should have hung up a while ago. Once you get past the accusations and the not-quite-apologies, there's really not much to say between them.]

Well. I'd say "I'll see you around," but it's pretty clear you don't want that ever happening.

Not true. I'd be more than happy to see you around. You, especially. I just don't know if it's a good idea.

Me especially? [She echoes the words before she can stop herself?] What is that supposed to mean?

[There's a long pause, before a very reluctant answer.]

I only meant that, of all of the people I spent those months with, you're the one I find myself missing the most.

[A pause of her own, then, quietly,]

I miss you too, chico.

[realitywarped]

For no real reason, presumably. But... it's nice to hear, at least.

[And it genuinely is, because he'd sort of assumed once the shock was over, they'd all realise how much better off they were without him around.]
